Bree Thomas - Wool Moths Workshop
Beechworth Victoria
Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 September 2023
Making Wool Moths with Bree Thomas
“Pleasure’s a Moth, that sleeps by day
And dances by false glare at night;
But Joy’s a Butterfly, that loves
To spread its wings in Nature’s light.”

In this workshop:
Make a moth of your own design
Learn the steps to create a sculptural textile moth shawl pin.
Using methods such as thread painting, thread sketching and appliqué on your sewing machine we will create realistic or fantastic wings from wool fabric.
Finally you will assemble your moth by hand stitching, creating your own piece of wearable art.
If a large textile brooch is not your thing, you could pin it to a curtain or sit it on a shelf as a piece of art which can be just as satisfying 😊

Bree Thomas Biography –
I have lived in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria for as long as I can remember – having grown up here, it is where I draw my inspiration and make art.
My works are produced with a variety of mediums including one or any: ink, pastel, pencil, paper, textiles and fibre.
My main inspiration is the natural world. I have a particular interest in the critters found around me, a special love for the little things that others may not see – the insects, the beautiful minutiae.
Moths have always ‘visited’ me. It’s as if they know I adore them, or perhaps having them close has given me a chance to really explore their beauty.
When I was about 19 at art school drawing and painting, I came across Annemieke Mein’s book about her textile art journey. That is when I knew that one day I too would make textile moths.
Within the year, I was raising a family and generally my creativity was in clothes and toy making. In 2017 I bought a Bernina sewing machine. Until then I had only hand stitched a few moths. After 2017 & my exploration into free motion embroidery, the moth possibilities became endless.
It has taken me close to twenty years for me to realize moth making a true reality and I haven’t looked back!
