Use your domestic sewing machine like a potters’ wheel and form a bowl or platter shape. Choose an image from several kits available and stitch the picture to your bowl. These can be hung on the wall; they could be framed in a box, or set upon a flat surface. You could also stitch a lid for the shape and upon lifting, reveal an artwork.
Sculpting a vessel like a bowl or a platter is a simple process on the sewing machine and is a quirky and different format for any artwork. I have made several vessels using different processes and in this workshop I shall teach you how to make them from ragged cord which you shall stitch on your domestic sewing machine.
The entire vessel is made from fabric and threads using only 3 techniques, namely, ragged cord, fibre embedment using scribble stitch, and free motion machine embroidery.
One of the most delightful aspects of form shaping is that it is ever so slightly unpredictable and very easily manipulated, similar to building a clay pot on the wheel.
This workshop has a kit (of $50) and I hope to have a number of different images that you can choose from. At the time of going to press, I only had the bird series pictured above but more images of different sets will be added to this workshop. The kit contains a set of instructions, colour images, and black and white templates (1 kit will make the whole set).

From a simple line drawing to an intricate painting, the portrait as a subject matter sits firmly in the art world. Learn to stitch your own simple line drawing or intricate painting using your domestic sewing machine. The difference between rendering a face and a bowl of fruit is in the mental approach; there is more tension – the desire to achieve a specific likeness is the dominant factor. This is more stressful than getting an apple to look like a general apple (I still charge slightly more for a portrait commission than for any other subject matter). I always work from my own drawings because I am a full-time artist and it is my job to do so, but that does not mean that you, as the student, have to be able to draw and paint. I have developed a technique of transferring the portrait to the canvas which eliminates this necessity. We shall explore different ways to develop your stitched line drawing into a finished portrait using my techniques of fibre embedment using scribble stitch and free motion machine embroidery. You will need a photograph of your subject matter in the same size as you wish your artwork to be. This will also serve as your reference image; if it is black and white, then your art piece shall also be black and white.
