Ro Bruhn - Unpick, Paint, Create Workshop
Beechworth Victoria
Friday 15, Saturday 16 & Sunday 17 September 2023
In this workshop we will check out our wardrobe for unloved, 'not worn anymore' clothing in lightweight to medium cotton or linen fabrics. If you are fortunate not to be in that situation then the Charity shops are a good start.
If you want to get a head start you could begin by unpicking the seams. I know that sounds crazy but it’s worth it in the end. The seams, pockets, cuffs and collars provide great texture and interest to your work with the stitched holes in the seams.
If that idea puts you off you can cut the garment's seams, pockets etc but still keep them. If you would rather wait until class to do this, that’s OK too.
The fabric will then be painted and when dry some will be decorated with markers and painted highlights. We will slowly build up a picture using the painted fabrics as well as some additional scraps of other fabrics that you have with you, you don’t need a lot.
Machine stitching makes it quicker and easier, but if you prefer you can stitch it all by hand. Hand stitching can also be added to your piece after it has been machined.
This is a great way to recycle your fabric and clothing. Once you know the techniques you can turn the fabrics into bags, vases even new clothing. You’re only limited by your imagination.
